Medina County has many arts activities presented by local arts organizations during the summer months, but the week of July 13 to July 19 is especially full of events. This is Medina County’s Annual Arts Week, supported and promoted by The Medina County Arts Council. The week traditionally has focused on being a lead-up to the ending event - Sunday’s Art-in-the-Park, the event sponsored by The Medina County Art League. It is the ideal week to stay near home to enjoy a wide variety of free and low cost local entertainment.
Many programs have been organized by the Arts Council’s Arts Week Committee. The committee includes: Roger Smalley, Chair, and members Barb McGreer, Jim Gilder, Judy Parish, Chris Nespeca, and Julie Zabkar, who represents Brunswick Art Works. Additional events are sponsored by other arts organizations. At Arts Council performaces, a trustee, or member, or a Brunswick Art Works trustee, will be present to introduce the musicians and artists. As in the past, The Medina County Arts Council has arranged and funded Arts Week performances and programs by local artists and entertainers for children and adults on Medina’s Public Square and in Brunswick at the Community Recreation Center outdoor stage. The free lunchtime performances are designed to provide entertainment and learning in the arts for children. The free evening concerts in Brunswick and Medina are focused on adult and family audiences. This year, additional concerts have been scheduled in Valley City and Spencer.
Children’s Programs at Brunswick Rec Center at 12:30 P.M.April Kotar will show children how to create their own multi-media work of art. The lesson will focus on the style of Impressionist Vincent Van Gogh. April is an art teacher. Tuesday, July 14: Learn a Hip Hop Dance. Anthony Taddeo will teach the children a Hip Hop routine. Wednesday, July 15: David Henterly will show children how to make music using ordinary household items such as spoons and washboards. Thursday, July 16: Drummer Jeff Wolfe will lead an interactive Drum Circle with instruments provided that will appeal to youth and all ages. Jeff has played in the Akron Steel Drum Band and is a graduate student at Ohio University. Friday, July 17: Nate ”The Great” Nawalaniec, will end the week with magic tricks and balloon art for everyone.

Tuesday, July 14: Jeff Wolfe, music performance grad from the University of Akron and master’s degree student at Ohio University, will give a performance on his drums and lead an interactive Drum Circle. Wednesday, July 15: Nate “The Great” Nawalaniec, magician from Hinckley, will entertain with magic tricks and balloon art. Thursday, July 16: Karen Duchoslav, educator and seasoned storyteller, will enthrall children with dramatic tales and humorous yarns. Friday, July 17: Instructors from The Medina Centre for Dance Art will give demonstrations, with audience participation, in basic and fun dance movements.

| Dan Polk and Dave Parsons will appear with their guitars and vocals that feature classic rock inspired by groups such as The Beatles, Neil Diamond, James Taylor, Crosby,Stills and Nash and others. Polk occasionally sings the National Anthem at Cleveland Indians games and Parsons leads a Christian Rock Band that plays in the Cleveland area. These Medina residents have regularly performed in area restaurants and night clubs for 20 years. | |

| Saxophone player Tony Rump attended the University Of Cincinnati College Conservatory Of Music as a Music Performance major. A Medina resident, Tony performs regularly on many evenings at area restaurants in the Medina area, as well as in local theatrical productions. A Medina resident, by day, he travels and sells chemicals for a global manufacturer and is a part time professor at Walsh University. Tony will also be playing July 15th at the Brunswick Rec Center, listed below. | |

| “Jim Gill and Doc Dreyfuss in Concert” promises to appeal to adult and family audiences in two ways as the musicians entertain their listeners with Gill’s comedy and banter as well as their music. Gill is a singer, song writer, and guitarist who will delight the audience with his musical storytelling. Dreyfuss will accompany on his electric viola. | |
Chalk Art for Children will again precede the regular Friday night Medina Community Band Concert. The band, which is celebrating 150 years of concerts this summer, will be conducted by Marcus Neiman. Children and youth will have the opportunity to draw their own art work on the sidewalks around the outside of Public Square. Jim Gilder, Arts Council Trustee, will have a table to distribute the free chalk. Unless it rains, this artwork is there for visitors to Art-in-the-Park to see on Sunday.
Wednesday, July 15:Evening Concerts in Brunswick Saxophonist Tony Rump will play traditional tunes, jazz fusion, blues, and more. When not at a gig, Tony is a chemical salesman and economics professor at Walsh University. This concert will be on the outdoor stage at the Brunswick Rec Center at 7 p.m. The event will be on the indoor stage in the event of rain. This concert, and the Friday concert are cooperative efforts by the Medina County Arts Council, Brunswick Art Works, and the City of Brunswick.
Thursday, July 16:Jay Wardeska will host the Capital University Drum and Bugle Corps and direct the Brunswick Community Band in a special concert in the Brunswick High School Stadium at 7 p.m. This program takes place with the cooperation and support of the Brunswick City Schools as well as the Community Band members.
Friday, July 17:Jim Gill, singer, song writer, and guitarist will delight the audience with his knack for musical storytelling. Jim is an illustrator when he is not playing his guitar or telling amusing stories about growing up in a large family. Electric viola wizard Doc Dreyfuss will accompany Jim.
New This Year - Evening Concerts in Valley City and Spencer On Wednesday, July 15.The Medina County Arts Council in cooperation with the Liverpool Township Trustees, will present a concert by Ryan Beke, Solo Acoustic Guitarist, at the Mill Stream Park off Maple Street in Valley City. The concert begins at 7 p.m. and is free. Beke is a guitar teacher and plays in several music groups as well as performing solo acoustic guitar. He recently was accepted to the Berklee College of Music in Boston.
Thursday, July 16, will find Ryan Beke performing in Spencer at Firestone Park. The park is located on Rt. 301 and the concert will begin at 7 p.m. This free event is sponsored by The Medina County Arts Council in cooperation with the Spencer Village Council.
Concert in Litchfield - The Litchfield Town Band will play one of its historic regular Friday night band concerts on Friday, July 17, on the Circle at Rt. 18 and Rt. 83. The concert begins at 7:00 p.m. Take your lawn chairs and blankets.
This week’s Summer Breeze Concert in Wadsworth on Thursday, July 16, will feature Seven Bridges. This performing group will present “A tribute to hits of the Eagles.” Sponsored by the Wadsworth Rec Department, the concert will be at the Downtown Gazebo at 7 p.m. The rain site is the Steiner Center.
Twenty students in grades 3 through 6, enrolled in this year’s 2009 art class in Cartooning and Humorous Illustration, will complete their two week class on July 16. The Medina County Arts Council, in cooperation with the The Medina City Schools, sponsored the class at the Drake Center taught by professional artist Jim Gill. This is the second year the Arts Council has sponsored the class. Gill, who worked 20 years for American Greetings, currently teaches art privately and as an artist-in-residence for schools through the Young Audiences program in Northeast Ohio. In the class, students study the fundamentals of character construction, using simple geometric shapes to render expressions that convey emotions, and learning basic design elements. Gill says “Imagination and a desire to draw is all you require for this four class summer session.” The multi-talented Gill is also scheduled for music performances during Arts Week in Brunswick and Medina.
The Arts Council Program Committee for the art class project includes Highland elementary art teacher Lee Palencar, Chair; Nancy Sprowls, Arts Council Executive Director, and Judith Parish, retired Buckeye District children’s librarian. The committee is planning to arrange a public display of selected work from the class.
Brunswick ACT Stages “Guys and Dolls” Brunswick ACT will be staging Guys and Dolls, the hit musical based on the characters and stories of Damon Runyon, on Friday and Saturday, July 17 and 18 during Arts Week. The productions will be on the stage of the Brunswick High School Performing Arts Center, 3581 Center Road in Brunswick. The directors are David Vosburgh and Keith Stiver. Curtain time is 8:00 p.m. The show will also be presented on July 24 and 25.
Tickets are all $12 and may be purchased at Buehlers in Brunswick or at the door. ACT officers working on the show are Art Fenton, President; Lila Robinson, Secretary; and Ken Chamers, Treasurer. Check www.brunswickact.org for additional information.
The 36th Art-in-the-Park fills Medina Public Square on Sunday, July 19This nationally-known juried art show will highlight art work by artists selected from all over the country. Work by 130 different artists will be featured this year. From 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. - rain or shine - booths and displays will showcase art for sale. There is no admission charge. Senior Co-Chair for the show is Jo-Ann Rettig-Rau. Working with her are Co-Chairs Denise Marabito and Karyn Goldmeier. Sharon Borror is the Art League President.
