Ohio Regional Music Arts and Cultural Outreach (ORMACO) continues its free Sunday Concerts in the Country with the Turner/Exton/Goodman/Cirilllo Jazz Quartet. The program focuses on the importance of the jazz organ and the development of its role in the jazz idiom. Although jazz organ properly begins with Fats Waller, as he recorded several popular songs in the 20s and 30s, it wasn’t until Count Basie played a sparser jumping and swinging style in the 40s that would later influence players such as Wild Bill Davis and Jimmy Smith, that the popularity of the instrument in jazz would take off. The quartet will be playing and improvising music of this important jazz idiom. You can expect some blues, jazz standards and even contemporary sounds, as the organ’s versatility has been explored in all these genres.
The program will take place at HeARTland, 8187 Camp Road Homerville, Ohio, 44235. In the event of rain, the concert will take place at the Homerville United Methodist Church, 9097 Spencer Road, Homerville, Ohio, 44235. If not, you can live stream the event on the ORMACO Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/Ormaco.Inc/. For more information call 419-853-6016.
