Neo5 Brass Quintet: An Afternoon of Tunes for Brass

On Sunday, January 14, 2024 Ohio Regional Music Arts and Cultural Outreach (ORMACO) and the Wadsworth Public Library opens their 2024 Sunday Live at the Library concerts with Northeast Ohio-based Neo5 Brass Quintet in a program of a variety of tunes for brass..The program takes place at 2 pm at the Wadsworth Public Library, 132 Broad Street, Wadsworth, OH 44281.

About the Artists:

Erik Sundet leads a versatile career as conductor, music arranger, orchestral trumpet player, jazz trumpet player and teacher. He graduated with a BME from Wartburg College and an MFA in trumpet performance from The University of Iowa. In 1985, Erik served as principal trumpet in l’Orquesto Sinfonica de Xalapa, Mexico. He has since been an active trumpet player in many orchestras in Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Erik currently teaches strings and band at Valley Christian Academy in Aurora, Ohio, and applied trumpet at Kent State University.

John Olsson joined the trombone section of the River City Brass as Principal in 2007. Previously he had been the bass trombonist with Canton and Wheeling Symphony

Orchestras. Mr. Olsson earned a Bachelor of Music Education from Youngstown State University and a Master of Music from Carnegie/Mellon University. Starting in 2003, he began a 12-year tenure teaching trombone students and trombone ensemble at Youngstown State University. He currently plays with The NEO Brass Quintet, True North Orchestra and other ensembles as a freelance performer.

Alan DeMattia joined the horn section of The Cleveland Orchestra in 1984, after serving as Principal Horn of the Canton Symphony and the Ohio Chamber Orchestra. He earned a Bachelor of Music Education at Kent State University and a Master of Music from the Cleveland Institute of Music. Active internationally as a player and teacher, Mr. DeMattia currently teaches at the Kent-Blossom Music Festival. He also plays in the piano and horn duo Moreso with pianist Joseph Quittner and is a member of NEO5.

Wes Thompson earned a Bachelor of Music degree from Youngstown State University and a Master of Music Performance degree from Catholic University of America. He was a member of the United States Navy Concert Band in Washington, D. C., where he was assistant solo cornetist. While in the Band he was a member of the Navy Band Brass Quintet, was featured as a soloist and completed three annual tours throughout the United States. Mr. Thompson has played in the Youngstown Symphony, Prince William County Orchestra, the Akron Brass Quintet and Ohio Chamber Brass Quintet.

Bass Trombonist and Band Leader

Eric Dregne has been part of the Northeast Ohio music scene for over 30 years. With degrees from Youngstown and Cleveland State Universities, he studied with Dr. Michael Crist, Dr. Andrew Mitchell, and bass trombonists John Rojak and Dave Taylor. He performs regularly as a freelance artist in multiple musical settings such as rock, pop, jazz, salsa and classical. He is a BAC Instruments artist along with being a member of the NEO5 Brass.
